Cubis Systems launches D400 composite covers to rethink heavy-duty access
Cubis Systems is introducing a new approach to D400 access.
We’re proud to launch our D400 composite cover range: a lightweight, modular system designed to simplify installation while maintaining heavy-duty performance.
D400 access covers have historically prioritised load performance at the expense of usability. Traditional ductile iron and concrete slab solutions often require lifting plant, involve restricted access, and can slow installation. (Particularly across large or complex chamber layouts.)
Our new composite system has been developed to challenge that convention. Our D400 composite cover system:
a) separates load performance from installation weight
b) improves safety, access, and adaptability on site
Here’s a closer look at the D400 composite cover range.

Addressing a long-standing site challenge
Heavy-duty access covers haven’t changed much in decades.
Traditional D400 solutions (typically, ductile iron or concrete slabs) deliver the required strength, but often introduce challenges around weight, restricted access, and installation time. These factors can slow projects down, increase risk, and limit efficiency on site.
The Cubis D400 composite system has been developed to address these issues head-on.
By rethinking how load is achieved and distributed, we’ve created a system that maintains D400 performance while improving usability for installation and maintenance teams.
🔗 BTS story: Inside the D400 composite cover launchLightweight performance, built as a system
Rather than relying on heavy, single-piece components, the Cubis system distributes load across a modular steel frame, floating beams, and composite covers. This approach enables:
Fast product design facts:
Designed for practical installation
Installation efficiency sits at the core of the system design. By reducing individual component weight and introducing modular construction, the system removes the need for lifting plant and simplifies installation across a range of site conditions.
“Traditional D400 covers have always prioritised strength, but that often comes at the expense of usability. We wanted to address the real challenges installers face - namely, weight, access, and flexibility - without compromising performance.” James Gallagher, Head of Innovation, Cubis Systems
Built for modern infrastructure projects
The D400 composite cover range has been designed to support a wide range of heavy-duty infrastructure applications.
From large chambers to restricted access sites, the system offers practical advantages across:
🕋 Data centres
⚡ Power and utilities infrastructure
🛤️ Rail depots and transport networks
🏭 Distribution and logistics facilities
“Weight and handling are consistent challenges with traditional D400 covers. By reducing that weight and improving access, we’re helping customers install faster, safer, and with greater flexibility on site.” Andy Hobbis, Head of Sales, Cubis Systems
A new option within the Cubis system portfolio
The D400 composite cover range sits alongside Cubis’ existing access cover and chamber solutions, including the STAKKAbox™ range.
This gives specifiers and contractors greater flexibility — enabling them to select the right solution based on site conditions, installation requirements, and long-term access needs.
Rethinking heavy-duty access
Heavy-duty performance doesn’t need to come with heavy installation.
The Cubis D400 composite cover range reflects a shift towards more practical, adaptable access solutions. It's designed to improve safety, efficiency, and usability on site.
